Dr. Maher traces his roots back to the state of Rhode Island where he was born and raised. Dr. Maher attended Providence College where he achieved a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology. His veterinary education took place at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine where he earned his DVM degree. He remained in the greater Boston area for his internship and served 2 years on staff at the South Shore Veterinary Associates before returning to Tufts University to complete a 3-year residency in internal medicine.
A move to the wild, wild west took place after completion of his residency where he practiced internal medicine at the Pet Medical Center – Granada Hills in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles for 11 years. It was the California Veterinary Specialists who prompted Dr. Maher and his wife Margie to move to North County San Diego in 2002. Dr. Maher remained a member of the internal medicine department at CVS practicing internal medicine in the San Marcos, Murrieta, and Carlsbad facilities through 2008. From 2009 forward Dr. Maher gained valuable experience practicing veterinary internal medicine at the Animal Urgent Care and Specialty Group (Escondido), the Veterinary Medical & Surgical Group (VMSG-Orange County) and recently the Veterinary Emergency and Referral Center of Hawaii (Honolulu). It was his desire to reunite with his friends, colleagues and extended Ohana at the VCA – California Veterinary Specialists that lured him and his family to leave island life in Oahu and move back to sunny San Diego!
Dr. Maher is board certified in veterinary internal medicine (ACVIM) and is a board-certified practitioner (ABVP). He enjoys all aspects of internal medicine but has special interests in endocrinology, gastroenterology, and cardiology. He has extensive experience performing a variety of endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures (i.e., upper/lower GI endoscopy, rhinoscopy, bronchoscopy, urethroscopy/cystoscopy and laparoscopy for minimally invasive organ biopsy). He has completed extensive training in abdominal/thoracic ultrasonography and echocardiography and has over 20 years of experience in performing these imaging procedures.
When not practicing veterinary internal medicine Dr. Maher enjoys spending time with family (Wife Margie, 2 dogs – Desi and Benny and their Meyer’s parrot Cricket), golfing, skiing, hiking and being a faithful fan of his beloved NE Patriots, Boston Bruins, Boston Celtics and World Series Champion Boston Red Sox.
